Lagomorph wins the 2021 Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia Masterworks Arts Award
Halifax, Nova Scotia/Kjipuktuk, Mi’kma’ki – Lagomorph has been named the 2021 winner of the $25,000 Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia Masterworks Arts Award – the largest award for any work of art in any medium in Nova Scotia. Created by Alexander MacLeod (author) and Andrew Steeves (bookmaker, Gaspereau Press), the work is an exquisitely written and hand-crafted letterpress book which exemplifies mastery of form by both creators in their respective mediums.
The work was selected as the Winner by an independent, multidisciplinary jury of artists: Francesca Ekwuyasi, Nelson MacDonald, and Lukas Pearse. The jury was enchanted by the contrasting yet complementary nature of the work – a contemporary short story about a rabbit who bears witness to changes in a family. This work of present-day fiction was then captured on the page using traditional, largely bygone methods of typesetting, printing, and bookbinding.
The jury commented “Lagomorph is exemplary in its quality and masterful artisanship, inside and out. The work stays with you long after you put it down.”
Lagomorph is the fourth Winner falling under the writing and publishing genre in the multi-disciplinary Masterworks Award’s 16-year history. Previous winners include Ocean by Sue Goyette (2017), Alma and Amédé by Georgette Leblanc (2010), and All Our Wonder Unavenged by Don Domanski (2008).
The announcement of the Winner took place at a reception at Government House, hosted by Their Honours, the Honourable Arthur J. LeBlanc, ONS, QC and Her Honour Mrs. Patsy LeBlanc. The Masterworks Foundation Board of Directors extends their sincere thanks to His Honour for his continued patronage of the Masterworks Award. The Masterwork Foundation also thanks Arts Nova Scotia and the Craig Foundation for their direct support of the Award and Scotiabank for their support of the Future Masters program.
