Robin E. Muller was born in Virginia. She received her BFA degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond in 1976 and her MFA degree from University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 1978. She worked at the deYoung Museum in San Francisco and the University of North Dakota before emigrating to Canada to join the faculty of NSCAD in 1979. She has taught weaving, specializing in complex structures and introducing Jacquard weaving into the curriculum. She has also taught book arts, foundation and craft history. She has completed residencies at the Banff Centre for the Arts and studied Jacquard weaving at the Montreal Centre for Contemporary Textiles and the Jacquard Center in Hendersonville, North Carolina.
After years of doing geometric weavings, she discovered book arts, and used that as her primary medium for ten years. Since then she has been trying to integrate the ideas used to create weaving and books to create works that encompass sensibilities from both. Some of this work uses travel photos to create scrolls and artist’s books using jacquard weaving. Many of these works pay homage to traditional makers she has visited in Europe, Turkey, India, China, Japan and Peru.
Robin Muller’s art work has been exhibited across the US and Canada as well as Norway, Finland, France, Germany, Korea and 3 African countries. Her weavings and artist’s books are included in private and public collections including The National Museum of Civilization in Ottawa and the Nova Scotia Art Bank.
